Floods are frustrating  and can be devastating. When there is a flood the water is like to become contaminated. There are three categories of contaminated water and each very different.

Category One: Clean Water Flood Damage

Water typically comes from a broken pipe or overflowing tub. I’m sure every parent has a child who has let the bathtub overflow. If so you have experience this type of water damage. This type of flooding is more of a pain in the but then a health hazard. If the water is left to stand it becomes a  Category Two after 48 hours if not cleaned up quickly.

Category Two: Grey Water Flood Damage

Grey Water comes from bathtubs, showers, sinks, dishwashers, and washing machines. This type of flooding usually happens when an appliance leaks or a hose becomes kinked. Grey water hasn’t come into contact with animal or human waste but has other contaminants that can be hazardous, such as soap, bleach, grease, or food residue. Category Two water becomes Category Three water within about 48 hours due to bacteria and mold growth.

Category Three: Black Water Flood Damage

Category Three is the most hazardous type of floodwater and is called black water because its main source is sewage containing animal and human waste. It may contain dangerous chemicals, disease causing bacteria and debris. Exposure to category three water can cause illness and could even cause death. Floods from natural disasters can allow blackwater to invade your home, as can a sewage backup. It is extremely important that you never enter an area contaminated with blackwater or attempt to clean it yourself; leave it to the professionals.
